Back to School Tips for Foster & Kinship Carers
- 17 Apr 2025

Heading back to school can be exciting, but it can also bring up big feelings—especially for kids in care.
Here are a few simple ways to help make the transition smoother:
- Talk it through. Chat about what to expect and, if possible, visit the school together, when it’s less overwhelming.
- Touch base with teachers. A quick check-in can help them understand any extra support a child in Out of Home Care might need
- Keep routines simple. Mornings and after-school wind-downs feel safer when they’re predictable. Simple tools like Visual Charts can help
- Reassure them. Remind them it’s okay to feel nervous or even scared. Focus on celebrating the small steps and little wins
- Check in regularly. Some kids open up straight away, others take time – just keep the door open.
A little support goes a long way in helping them feel safe, confident, and ready for the year ahead!
